Music on Hold (MOH)

Music on hold (MOH) is the business practice of playing recorded music to fill the silence that would be heard by telephone callers who have been placed on hold. It is especially common in situations involving customer service. Music on hold is sometimes referred to as phone on hold, message on hold, on hold messaging, or hold music.

Purpose of Music on Hold:

  • to fill the silence
  • to shorten the waiting time of the caller
  • to influence the mood of the caller in a positive way
  • to make them stay online
  • to inform them about products or services

Points to consider:

  • good quality
  • not too many instruments
  • genre / style of music appropriate to product or service
  • estimated wait time / duration of song
  • no life radio
