Dialogue

Jean: Hi Chris, would you like to do something with me this weekend?

Chris: Sure. What shall we do?

Jean: I don't know. Do you have any ideas?

Chris: Why don't we see a film?

Jean: That's sounds good to me. Which film shall we see?

Chris: Let's see "Action Man 4".

Jean: I'd rather not. I don't like violent films. How about going to "Mad Doctor Brown"? I hear it's quite a funny film.

Chris: OK. Let's go see that. When is it on?

Jean: It's on at 8 p.m. at the Rex. Shall we have a bite to eat before the film?

Chris: Sure, that sounds great. What about going to that new Italian restaurant Michetti's?

Jean: Great idea! Let's meet there at 6.

Chris: OK. I'll see you at Michetti's at 6. Bye.

Jean: Bye.

Chris: See you later!

What motivates employees?

Before you can create a motivated workforce, you need to understand why workers may lack motivation in the first place.

Indicators of low motivation

Some of the indicators of low motivation for your employees could be:

  • high staff turnover
  • low productivity
  • a poor workplace atmosphere
  • a lot of employee grievances to deal with

Low motivation among your employees could be caused by:

  • monotonous work
  • lack of praise
  • individuals feeling ignored
  • a poor reward structure
  • little opportunity for promotion or advancement within the organisation

How to motivate your workforce

You can motivate people with:

  • varied and interesting work - perhaps giving the opportunity to travel
  • demonstration of trust – delegating key tasks can empower employees and stimulate innovation
  • high-quality training and development - eg encouragement to study for professional qualifications
  • an 'open door' culture in which managers are approachable
  • consistent and genuine leadership
  • helping them to feel part of a team - giving them a sense of belonging and loyalty to the other team members
  • respect for a good work-life balance - eg offering the opportunity for flexible working
  • fairness at work, including promoting equality and diversity
  • proactive and regular communication
  • regular appraisal and positive feedback - restating business objectives and recognising your staff's contribution
  • requests for feedback, either in person or via staff surveys, on how employees feel about their roles, the support they get, and improvements to the business -
  • the chance to socialise with colleagues at organised events
  • recognition and reward for performance – set clear objectives and celebrate employee achievement – any reward should be seen as fair and transparent to all staff
  • encouragement – if someone’s standards fall short, help them to get back on track or offer more training if needed

<Writing>

Write an essay of about 200–300 words describing your ideal workplace. Start by making a list of things that need to be included. Divide your essay into sections:

  • kind of building/facility
  • rooms
  • basic layout of rooms
  • people
  • activities
  • the work itself

My ideal workplace requires a space to let your mind wonder and stimulate creativity. I would like to submerge myself in a peaceful environment each day when I go to work. The layout and design of the space should have an aesthetically pleasing style and vibe. This will create a good and positive energy for the employees to produce their best work.

Though the feeling of the space is very important, what is truly crucial is how the company is run internally. There must be a positive environment with little to no drama between employees and coworkers. Employees should encourage each other and work together to achieve the best results- in order to do so, there must be a strong culture within the company.

Another important aspect of the workplace is leisure time. For example, Google has a very active 'campus' that gives employees many perks to joining the team. For example, they have means of exercising or taking a nap while on a break. It is important for the employer to understand what it would be like to be an employee. This ties into having proper communication throughout each level of the company. This will keep everyone informed and on the same page for future plans and changes.

Having a peaceful and creative workplace for employees to produce new ideas for the company is essential to its success. You should always remember how important it is to have a positive and inviting environment for workers to create and carry out company tasks and objectives in a productive manner.
